the Hindeloopen costume

Members of 'Aald Hielpen' wear the Hindeloopen costume, as it was worn in Hindeloopen in the early part of the 19th century. The Hindeloopen costume is very colourful and varied. It is completely different from the other Frisian costumes.

In a show performed by 'Aald Hielpen', you can see three important differences in the women's costumes. In the old days in Hindeloopen, it used to be easy to see from a number of costume accessories, if a woman was married or not. The colour of the costume indicated whether a woman was in mourning or not.

Various pieces of gold or silver jewellery make the costume complete. Valuable fabrics like chintz and East-Indian fur were not often used in work clothes.

The men, captains and other seamen were dressed much less exuberant than the women. Apart from a black coat and pants their shirt was the only colourful item.

During a costume show, or comprehensive show, a variety of work clothes worn by the ordinary seamen and women will also be shown.

There is a lot more to be told about the Hindeloopen costume. During our shows, we pay a
great deal of attention to this.

The rich history of Hindeloopen can still be admired in "Museum Hindeloopen" in Hindeloopen.
